How can I make an old Windows PC run faster?

I have an old Windows PC that has become slow and unresponsive over time, and I want to improve its performance. What are effective ways to make my older Windows computer run faster without replacing hardware, such as optimizing settings, cleaning up files, or using specific tools or adjustments?

  • Hello,

There are some simple performance based settings you can configure to make your system running faster.

You can run sysdm.cpl command then go to Advanced > Performance > Settings and uncheck these options:

    • Animate controls and elements inside windows
    • Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing
    • Animations in the taskbar
    • Fade or slide menus into view
    • Fade or slide ToolTips into view
    • Fade out menu items after clicking
    • Show shadows under windows
    • Show translucent selection rectangle
    • Slide open combo boxes
    • Smooth-scroll list boxes
    • Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop

    Click Apply, OK.

Cut startup apps, clean junk files, scan malware, upgrade to SSD.

Open File Explorer, right-click your main drive (usually C:), and select Properties.

Select programs you no longer need and click Uninstall.
