How can a Windows PC show a file that does not actually exist?
File Explorer can display a stale directory entry although the underlying item is gone after a failed move, sync operation, network disconnect, or delayed refresh. Press F5 and restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager. Then open Command Prompt in the parent folder and run dir /a to determine whether the file exists outside Explorer. If it appears there, use its displayed name and try renaming or deleting it; pause OneDrive or another sync client first if the location is synchronized. If Command Prompt also says the item cannot be found, run chkdsk because inconsistent file-system metadata may be involved. Windows also provides a File and Folder troubleshooter for errors where an item “does not exist” during rename, move, or deletion. Do not use force-delete utilities until you confirm the full path and have a backup. Persistent errors on external or network storage should be checked on the system that owns it.
