File Explorer Crashing or Freezing Frequently on Windows 11
I am gotting frequent crashes and freezing issues with File Explorer on my Windows 11 system. It often becomes unresponsive or closes unexpectedly, especially when browsing folders or using network drives, which disrupts my workflow and makes it difficult to manage files efficiently.

Mine is new with 26h2. The taskbar is what freezes... nothing works except rebooting and of course the windows icon won't work so I push the physical windows key on the keyboard and that works, rebooting usually fixes it. This 26h2 has been a nightmare for me. It completely screwed up one of my computers, I can no longer access it via the network by its name, only by its ip address... I even had microsoft remote in and look at this... their response... reformat your computer.
Microsot has become a joke. Literally every single update causes terrible issues, then they turn around and tell you to reforat your computer, becuase they don't know how to fix what they screwed up. This is their OS if they don'r even know how ro fix their own OS problem (that they introduced), then we need to seriously reconsider who we are putting our trust in...

I have been having constant Windows 11 Explorer "Not Responding" freezing/crashing for years now and have just finally noticed a correlation. To be clear I do not have any third-party GUI tools installed now do I have any sort of customized setup. This is pretty vanilla Windows 11 Pro setup with Windows Defender as only AV.
I like to keep my Explorer window docked on one half of the screen (almost always the right side, but I doubt the side matters) and this is when all the "Not Responding" happens. When the Explorer window is not docked and free-moving I have yet to experience a crash. Even in large directories where it was more likely to happen, and no it didn't happen only in larger directories with large amounts of files/folders, it happened in smaller/less complex directories too.
The "Not Responding" when it happens outside of the docking, it does seem to happen the most when I select multiple files. However, it happens sometimes when selecting just one file or even sometimes just clicking in the Explorer window will set it off. Outside of the docking I have no other possible causes.Whether this is noted or looked into is up to MS, but I have to imagine I'm not the only one to ever experience this.

i also have a user who is experiencing explorer crashes, the taskbar at the bottom disappears and explorer window freezes, then after a minute or 2 it comes back to life it does these many times through out the day. we have re-imaged with new WIN11 and updated all drivers but the issue still persists.

SAME issue. Did you ever find a resolution? I tried the recommendations below prior and also updated my video drivers. No success.

Hi there!
I’m really happy to help you with this issue — and don’t worry, we can definitely fix it together.
Since I’m a developer, I usually go a bit deeper into the technical side, so if the basic steps don’t work, I can guide you through more advanced ones too.
Here are the steps I recommend:
1) Clear File Explorer history
•
Open File Explorer Options
•
Click Clear under “Privacy”
2) Disable Quick Access temporarily
Sometimes Quick Access causes freezes.
•
Open File Explorer Options
•
Set “Open File Explorer to:” → This PC
•
Uncheck both privacy checkboxes
3) Rebuild the icon and thumbnail cache
Run these commands in CMD (non-admin is fine):
ie4uinit.exe -ClearIconCache
taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
del /f /q %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\thumbcache_*.db
start explorer.exe
4) Check for shell extensions causing crashes
Third‑party context menu handlers often cause freezing.
Use ShellExView → disable non‑Microsoft extensions → restart Explorer.
5) If the issue happens with network drives
•
Disable “Automatically search for network folders and printers”
•
Make sure the network path is reachable
•
Pause OneDrive temporarily to test
If none of these help, I can walk you through deeper steps like checking Event Viewer logs or resetting the Explorer shell packages.
Just tell me and I’ll be happy to continue.

Hello,
First two steps worked for me.
Thanks

The first two steps you suggested fixed this issue completely for me. Thank you.

To do this, explorer has to run. Mine is continually crashing and creating a dump file every second or so.
Hello,
Suggest you to run System File Checker scan:
- Search for 'command prompt' using Windows Search.
- From results, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Type sfc /scannow command and press Enter key.
- Let the command complete and then reboot the machine.
I also recommend to perform clean boot:
