Feedback on App Package Sizes in Windows
I was looking at the sizes of some programs on Windows:
- NanaZip: 11 MB
- Calculator: 19 MB
- Wintoys: 120 MB
- Mozilla Firefox: 337 MB
- WhatsApp: 380 MB
Meanwhile, some official Microsoft tools take up much more space:
- Get Help: 270 MB
- Paint: 420 MB
- Snipping Tool: 532 MB
- Photos: 900 MB
- Edge (without opening anything): 1.99 GB
I understand that some tools are deeply integrated with Windows 11 (for example, Edge being part of the system). Still, it is curious how relatively simple apps from third parties can deliver rich functionality and modern UI with smaller packages — while many official apps end up occupying hundreds of MB or even several GB.
For example, the fluent app Files managed to reduce its package from ~400 MB to ~200 MB. With Microsoft pushing the Windows K2 initiative ( https://blogs.windows.com/windows-insider/2026/03/20/our-commitment-to-windows-quality/ ), I think it would be fair to optimize app packages further for user experience and storage efficiency.
This is especially relevant considering how expensive SSD storage remains nowadays.
