Feature Request: Show Bluetooth Icon in Windows 11 Taskbar Only When a Device Is Connected

I want to configure the Bluetooth icon in the Windows 11 taskbar to appear only when a device is actively connected via Bluetooth. Currently, the icon shows whenever Bluetooth is enabled, which isn’t useful for me. I need it to indicate an active Bluetooth connection, not just that Bluetooth is on.

Current Behavior: In Windows 11, the Bluetooth icon appears in the system tray as long as Bluetooth is enabled, even if no devices are connected. The option in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > More Bluetooth settings > Show the Bluetooth icon in the notification area only controls whether the icon shows when Bluetooth is active, not based on device connection status.

Desired Behavior: I want the Bluetooth icon to:

  • Appear in the taskbar only when at least one Bluetooth device is actively connected.
  • Disappear from the taskbar when no devices are connected, even if Bluetooth is enabled. This would make the icon a clear indicator of active connections, reducing visual clutter.

Why This Matters: The constant presence of the Bluetooth icon when enabled provides no actionable information. Knowing when a device is connected (e.g., headphones, mouse, or keyboard) is more valuable than knowing Bluetooth is on. A connection-based icon would align with how other system tray icons (like Wi-Fi or battery) indicate specific states.

Questions:

  1. Is there a native way to achieve this in Windows 11 that I might have missed?
  2. If not, could Microsoft consider adding this feature in a future Windows 11 update? Are there workarounds (e.g., registry tweaks, PowerShell scripts, or third-party tools) to customize the Bluetooth icon’s behavior?
  3. Are there plans to add more granular control over system tray icons, specifically for Bluetooth, to reflect connection status rather than just the enabled state?

This feature would improve the usability of the Bluetooth icon for many users. Thanks for any insights or suggestions!

Currently, no, Windows 11 does not natively support showing the Bluetooth icon only when a device is connected. The system's Bluetooth icon's visibility is primarily controlled by the "Show the Bluetooth icon in the notification area" setting, which toggles based on whether Bluetooth is enabled, not connection status.
