Dism error 1638 - OSUninstallWindow

Hi Guys,

I hope you are all well.

I recently updated ~30 machines from Windows 10 22H2 to Windows 11 24H2 (april build). I tried to extend rollback time to 30 days but I received following error:

In dism.log:

For upgrade process I used Windows 11 Installation Assistant.

What might be the cause of that issue? Visual C++ Redistr? Can I still extend rollback by registry entry and it will works? Should I consider different method of upgrade?

For now I noticed that only get/set-OSUninstallWindows returns that error.

Thank you and best regards,

Damian

Finally I was able to solve this by just installing Cumulative Update (newest possible). Windows 11 Installation Assistant downloads quite old (initial?) Win 11 24H2 build. It that build DISM doesn't work properly when I try to run this command. After installation latest CU, everything works as it should.

    Regards,

    Damian

  • I ran into similar issues when trying to tweak the rollback period after a big upgrade. The system sometimes just won’t let you change it anymore. At that point, I’ve found that the best workaround is to plan your rollback window before updating or rely on system backups instead.

Error 1638 during DISM operations typically indicates that the operation you're trying to perform is not valid in the current context, often because the feature or setting is already configured or not supported in your current OS state.
