Celestia: visualize the Milky Way on your PC
Celestia is open-source software (under the GNU GPL license) for real-time 3D simulation of space, which is not limited to Earth but to the entire Milky Way.
Programmed in OpenGL (100,000 lines of code), this software which runs on Windows, Linux and Mac OS, is the work of four programmers. Making extensive use of bump-mapping to draw the relief of the surface of the planets, the program allows free movement in space, and really impresses with the notion of scale that it makes clear (the rendering of each planet taken separately not being the most impressive compared to other simulations). It is based on NASA data, guaranteeing a real simulation. A software you absolutely must try!

Developed by a dedicated team of four programmers, Celestia makes extensive use of advanced graphics techniques like bump-mapping to depict the relief features of planetary surfaces. Its design allows for free movement in space, providing a true sense of scale and immersion—though its rendering of individual planets may not be as detailed as some other specialized simulations.

What makes Celestia stand out is its extensive use of bump-mapping techniques to render the relief and surface details of planets, creating a sense of realism and depth. It allows users to freely navigate through space, offering an immersive experience that vividly demonstrates the vast scale of the universe. While the rendering of individual planets may not be as hyper-detailed as some other simulations, the software's ability to convey the immense scale and structure of the galaxy is truly impressive.

Celestia is indeed an open-source project, licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). Its developers have done an impressive job of creating a comprehensive and accurate simulation of the Milky Way galaxy, leveraging NASA data to ensure its authenticity.
