Cannot Adjust External Monitor Brightness in Windows 11 Without Third-Party Software
I am unable to control my external monitor’s brightness through Windows 11 settings, but third-party software like Twinkle Tray works fine. I want to understand why Windows doesn’t provide this feature and if there is a way to enable it without using third-party apps.
System Specifications:
OS: Windows 11 (latest updates installed)
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9900X
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti (latest drivers installed)
Monitor: LG 34GP63A
Connection Type: DisplayPort 1.4 (tried HDMI, same issue)
Issue Details:
The Windows brightness slider is missing for my external monitor.
Brightness adjustment works with Twinkle Tray, meaning my monitor might support DDC/CI.
No brightness control option in NVIDIA Control Panel, only gamma and contrast.
Monitor OSD settings don’t show any clear option for DDC/CI (only OSD Lock On/Off).
What I’ve Tried:
Checked Windows Display settings (no brightness slider).
Enabled OSD settings, but no DDC/CI option found.
Updated NVIDIA drivers and Windows.
Switched to DisplayPort, but the issue remains.
Tried adjusting brightness in NVIDIA Control Panel (only gamma available).
Questions:
Does Windows 11 natively support brightness control for external monitors?
Why does third-party software work but not Windows?
Is there a way to enable DDC/CI in Windows without external apps?
Could this be a driver or hardware limitation?
I’d appreciate any insights or possible solutions! Thanks in advance.

1. Check monitor settings: Adjust the brightness using the physical buttons or menus on the monitor.
Make sure the monitor supports adjusting the brightness via software (usually requires support for the DDC/CI protocol).
2. Update the graphics card driver: Open the Device Manager.
Expand “Display Adapters”, right-click on the graphics card and select “Update Driver”.
Select “Automatically search for updated driver software.
3. Check Windows Settings: Open Settings > System > Display.
Check if there is a brightness adjustment option. If not, try using a shortcut key (e.g. Fn + Brightness key).
4. Use third-party software: Download and install software that supports external monitor brightness adjustment (ClickMonitorDDC, Twinkle Tray, etc.). Adjust the brightness of the external monitor through the software.
5. Contact Microsoft Support: If none of the above methods work, it is recommended to contact Microsoft Support team with detailed error messages and screenshots for further assistance.- QjohnCopper Contributor
You clearly didn't read name of ticket.
"Cannot Adjust External Monitor Brightness in Windows 11 Without Third-Party Software".
The question address lack of support DDC/CI in Windows 11.This slider works only for notebook internal monitor, but not for external monitors. And it cannot be extended by any 3rd party sw.
