Yes, files can be deleted without entering the Recycle Bin, but Windows normally does not delete ordinary personal files randomly.
Common reasons include:
- Using Shift + Delete.
- Deleting from a network location or some removable drives.
- Deleting a file that is larger than the Recycle Bin’s available space.
- Enabling Don’t move files to the Recycle Bin in its properties.
- An application or command-line tool deleting the file directly.
- Storage Sense removing files from locations and age ranges you configured.
Storage Sense and Disk Cleanup should only remove the categories selected in their settings; they do not normally choose random documents.
To check the Recycle Bin configuration:
- Right-click Recycle Bin and select Properties.
- Select each drive and make sure Custom size is enabled.
- Confirm that Don’t move files to the Recycle Bin is not selected.
- Enable Display delete confirmation dialog if you want an additional warning.
If files have already disappeared, check the OneDrive recycle bin, File History, backups and Restore previous versions. Stop saving new data to the affected drive before using file-recovery software, because new data may overwrite the deleted files.
