The Recommended Path: Windows 7 -> Windows 10 -> Windows 11

The safest and most reliable way, especially if you want to try to keep your files, is a two-step process:

Upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Although the official free upgrade offer for Windows 7 to Windows 10 has ended, you may still be able to perform this upgrade using the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool, and your existing Windows 7 license key might still activate Windows 10. This step should preserve your personal files and apps.

Upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11. Once on Windows 10, your system will be much closer to the requirements for Windows 11. If your PC meets the minimum hardware requirements (see the next section), you can then proceed with the free upgrade to Windows 11 via Windows Update or the Windows 11 Installation Assistant.
