Can I recover files after emptying the Mac Trash? Help!

I just emptied the Mac Trash and found that several important files were accidentally deleted... 😭 I have two computers at home, one is Windows 11 and the other is Mac, but the main files were deleted on the Mac and now I can't find them at all.

I tried Time Machine but didn't turn on the backup at all, and the terminal command didn't work... It says on the Internet that some data recovery software can recover, but most of them require payment. I don't know which one is reliable? Is there any free tool I can try? Or is there any way to help recover Mac files using Windows 11?

It's really urgent! Has anyone successfully recovered files after emptying the Mac Trash before? Please recommend the most effective method, thank you! ! 🙏

  • Don't worry, there is still a chance to recover files after emptying the Mac Trash, as long as too much new data is not written. You can try the AiseeeSoft data recovery first.  I have used it to successfully recover emptied photos and documents before.

I’ve been there before :( Let me try to answer your questions one by one based on my own experience.

Is there any free tool I can try?
To be honest, free Mac data recovery tools are quite limited, especially compared to Windows. Most Mac recovery tools only offer a free trial that allows you to scan and preview lost files — but you’ll usually need to pay (often $50 or more) to actually recover them. That’s the reality of the Mac ecosystem.

Can I recover Mac files using Windows 11?

In theory, yes — but it’s extremely complicated. If your lost files were on an external drive formatted in HFS+ or APFS, you could try connecting that drive to your Windows PC and use a recovery tool that supports Mac file systems. But:

    • Most Windows tools don’t fully support APFS.
    • If the data was on your Mac’s internal SSD, there’s no way to access it from Windows unless you remove the drive, which isn’t possible on most modern MacBooks (since the SSD is soldered to the motherboard).

    My personal experience
I had a very similar issue before — I’m using a MacBook Air 13-inch (2017) running macOS Sonoma. I accidentally emptied the Trash and lost some work files. I personally recommend 4DD1G Mac – it’s one of the few tools that can deeply scan a Mac drive and recover many file types. You just:

    • Install it on your Mac (avoid installing it on the same drive where the files were deleted).
    • Let it scan your disk.
    • Preview the files before recovery.

During my research, I found that Mac data recovery is a lot harder than on Windows, especially because most Apple devices now use high-speed SSDs with a feature called TRIM. This feature wipes deleted data almost immediately, making recovery nearly impossible once it’s triggered.

If your Mac uses an SSD (which it likely does), and no software can find your files, don’t waste time trying random tools. Your best shot is to contact a professional recovery lab — but be prepared: it could cost $800–$1500. Make sure to call a few labs to compare prices

Sometimes, files aren‘t fully deleted but remain hidden. You can use these commands to recover deleted files after emptying the trash on any Mac.

Step 1: Check for Hidden or Inaccessible Files

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles true; killall Finder

Open Finder and check if your deleted files are still visible. If found, move them to a different location.

Step 2: Search for Recently Deleted Files Using fs_usage

The fs_usage command can track file deletions.

    sudo fs_usage -w | grep -i "deleted"

Look for file paths in the output. If you find the path of a deleted file, try checking that location manually.

Step 3: Locate Deleted Files in /private/var

Some deleted files may still be recoverable in temporary directories.

    sudo find /private/var -name "*.yourfileextension"

Replace yourfileextension with the file type, e.g., pdf, jpg, docx. If you find files, try copying them to a safe location.

If you have iCloud backup enabled, you are able to recover deleted files from iCloud Drive or other iCloud services.

Method 1: Recover from iCloud Website

    1. Go to iCloud.com.
    2. Sign in with your Apple ID.
Click on Drive > Recently Deleted (bottom right).
    3. Browse and select the deleted files.
    4. Click Restore.

    2. Recover Files from iCloud "Data Recovery" (Within 30 Days)
If you emptied the Trash on your Mac, but the files were stored in iCloud, they might still be recoverable via Apple's iCloud Data Recovery.

    1. Go to iCloud.com.
    2. Sign in and go to Account Settings.
    3. Scroll down to Advanced (bottom of the page).
    4. Click Restore Files.
    5. Select the files you want to recover and click Restore.

Files in "Recently Deleted" remain for 30 days before being permanently erased. If you emptied the Mac Trash and iCloud doesn't have a backup, third-party data recovery software is required to recover deleted files on Mac after emptying the Trash. iCloud does not store system files or app data unless included in a Time Machine or full Mac backup.

  • When you delete a file, the data isn't immediately erased from the hard drive (especially traditional HDDs, though this is also true to a lesser extent with SSDs).  The operating system marks the space as available for new data.  When new data is written, it can overwrite the old data.  This is why acting quickly is crucial.  SSD drives are very quick, but the data does not disappear. The sectors can quickly be written to, making recovery more difficult.

If you're considering using third-party software to recover files after emptying the Mac Trash. Any data recovery success rate. The success rate of data recovery depends on several factors, including:

    • The age of the files.
    • Whether the data has been overwritten.
    • The type of hard drive (SSD vs. HDD).
    • The software or service used.
  • Yes, you can recover files after emptying the Trash on a Mac, but you need to act quickly to avoid overwriting the deleted data. If you have Time Machine enabled, you can restore deleted files from a previous backup.

Time Machine is Apple's built-in backup feature that allows you to automatically back up your entire Mac, including files, system settings, applications, and more. It helps you recover lost or deleted files, restore previous versions of documents, or even completely restore your Mac after a system failure.

    How Does Time Machine Work?

    1. Automatic Backups: Once set up, Time Machine automatically backs up your Mac every hour, keeping daily and weekly snapshots.Incremental Backups: It only saves changes since the last backup, reducing storage usage.
    2. Easy File Recovery: You can restore specific files, entire folders, or the whole system from previous backups.

Recover files after emptying the Mac Trash from Time Machine

    1. Open the folder where the deleted file was originally stored.
    2. Click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar > Select Enter Time Machine.
    3. Use the timeline on the right to navigate to an earlier versionSelect the file and click Restore.

If you have a Time Machine backup, you can recover deleted files even after emptying the Trash.

Emptying the Trash on a Mac without Time Machine... that's a heart-sinking moment. Don't panic just yet! While it’s true that data recovery after that point can be a challenge, there are definitely things you can try. When you empty the Trash, the files aren't immediately gone. The space they occupied on your hard drive (or SSD) is marked as available for new data. The data itself is still there until that space is overwritten. The most critical thing is to stop using your Mac as much as possible to minimize the chance of new data overwriting your lost files.

How to recover files after emptying the Mac Trash?

Check iCloud or other Cloud storage to recover files after emptying the Mac trash. If you were using iCloud Drive or another cloud storage service (Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc.), there's a chance your deleted files were synced there.

    1. Log in to your Cloud Account: Go to the website or use the app for the cloud storage service you were using (e.g., iCloud.com, Dropbox.com).
    2. Check the Trash or Deleted Files Folder: Look for a "Trash," "Deleted," or "Recently Deleted" folder within the cloud storage interface.
    3. Restore Files: If the files are there, select them and choose the option to "Restore" or "Recover."

After you realize you've emptied the Trash and need to recover files, stop using your Mac as much as possible.  Every action you take on the computer increases the risk of overwriting the deleted data, making recovery more difficult or impossible. This is especially critical if you have an SSD.
