Can I access mac formatted hard drive on Windows?

I’m trying to access mac formatted hard drive on windows and not sure what the safest way is.

I have an external drive that was used on a Mac, but now I need to open it on my Windows laptop to copy some photos and files. Windows detects the drive, but I can’t read it normally, and I’m worried about clicking the wrong thing and losing data.

What’s the easiest and safest way to access mac formatted hard drive on windows without formatting the drive?

Thanks.

You are correct when you access Mac formatted hard drive on Windows pc: Windows cannot read Mac-formatted drives on its own. When you plug the drive in, Windows doesn't recognize the file system and may ask if you want to format it. You must click "Cancel" if this happens, as formatting will permanently erase all your photos and files.

What I Recommend to access Mac formatted hard drive on Windows

    1. First, determine your drive's format: Connect it to Windows. If Disk Management shows it as "HFS+" or "Mac OS Extended," HFSExplorer would work . If it shows as "APFS," you need a different approach.

    2. If it's HFS+: HFSExplorer is genuinely free, open-source, and read-only . It requires Java but has been reliable for years .

    3. If it's APFS: Your only free options are:

    • Find a Mac to transfer files to exFAT
    • Use a free trial of commercial software and copy everything within 5-15 days.
    • After 15 days, the free trial ends. However, this gives you ample time to copy all your photos and files. Once your data is safely transferred, you no longer need the software.

    4. For future cross-platform drives: Format external drives as exFAT, which both Windows and Mac can read/write natively.

    1. Use fsapfsmount for APFS

This is part of libfsapfs and is meant to mount an APFS container. It is mainly a forensic/read-only style tool, so it is better for safe file access than for normal daily use.

    Example:

    fsapfsmount \\.\PhysicalDrive3 M:\

    2. Use 7-Zip command line for .dmg files

If your “Mac drive” is actually a DMG image file, not a physical disk, I’d use 7-Zip from command line to extract it instead of mounting it. AppleInsider notes that 7-Zip can open and extract DMG contents on Windows.

    Example:

    7z x file.dmg -oC:\temp\dmg_extract

    3. Use hfsfuse for older HFS+ volumes

If the Mac disk is HFS+, there is also hfsfuse, a FUSE driver that mounts an HFS+ volume using a command like hfsfuse volume mountpoint. This is more technical, but it is another CLI-style route for older Mac-formatted disks.

    Example:

    hfsfuse \\.\PhysicalDrive3 M:\

If you just want the safest practical route to, I’d still pick hdimount first, because it explicitly supports both HFS and APFS on Windows through Dokany and is read-only. That makes it a cleaner choice when you want to access mac formatted hard drive on Windows without risking writes to the source disk.

This is part of libfsapfs and is meant to mount an APFS container. It is mainly a forensic/read-only style tool, so it is better for safe file access than for normal daily use.

If you want to access mac formatted hard drive on Windows with command line, I’d use hdimount instead of HFSExplorer. hdimount can mount HFS and APFS on Windows through Dokany, and it works in read-only mode, which is safer when you just want to copy files without risking changes to the Mac drive.

    Basic command:

    hdimount \\.\PhysicalDrive3 M:\

I’d install Dokany first, then install hdimount, open Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator, and run that command. Replace \\.\PhysicalDrive3 with your actual disk number and M:\ with the drive letter you want. This is probably the simplest CLI way to access mac formatted hard drive on Windows without formatting the drive.

The fundamental issue is that Windows has no native ability to read Apple's file systems . Microsoft does not license or build support for HFS+ or APFS, and Apple keeps these file systems proprietary.

If you are going to access Mac formatted hard drive on Windows PC. NTFS - 3G is a popular open-source driver that enables Windows systems to read and write to various file systems, primarily focusing on NTFS. However, when it comes to accessing a Mac formatted hard drive on Windows, NTFS - 3G is best the ideal solution because it is designed for Linux/ Windows and mainly supports NTFS and FAT file systems.

When accessing Mac formatted hard drive on Windows PC, it's important to avoid certain errors that could lead to data loss, corruption, or other issues. Here are the key errors to watch out for:

    1. Using write-enabled tools or accidentally writing data to the drive can corrupt the Mac filesystem.

    2. Accidentally formatting the drive in Windows or using disk management tools can erase all data.

    3. Some free tools may be unreliable or cause data corruption if they have bugs.

    4. Attempting to assign drive letters or force mount options can lead to filesystem errors.

    5. Removing the drive without ejecting properly can corrupt the filesystem.
