And I thought I use that for keyboard and mouse along come KB5018496 VeraCrypt click select file.. and it just hangs or freezes so I moved my keyboard and mouse to the motherboard back USB IO installed KB5018496 and now VeraCrypt works fine!
So I can only think MS have done something to the front USB

Legacy1First thing you should always do is get the latest drivers for your motherboard ( which often come with up-to-date USB controller drivers. ) Even with that in mind, with this version of Windows 11, you could run into latency issues with the UI when you have a lot of devices on a single controller. I have experienced this problem too, but not with VeraCrypt. The best way around this is to update all the dependencies, install the latest patches, and the latest drivers. It doesn't mean it will go away entirely, it just means you won't be relying on generic Windows drivers, and out-of-date software APIs. There's a far lower chance of the controller running off of a generic driver, which may cause the transceivers / SerDes to operate at a reduced speed, something much much lower than what was advertised by the vendor in the spec sheet / datasheet. It also depends on the devices you are using with this controller, especially if you mix USB 2.x with newer USB 3.x devices on the same bus:

Another setting you should look at changing: Veracrypt -> Settings -> Preferences -> Enable: Don't show wait message dialog when performing operations
It's also very important to change the default mount parameters ( if left unconfigured, this creates a lot of latency with the UI ) Example: -> Veracrypt -> Settings -> PKCS-5 PRF: HMAC-SHA-512
