Backup Nightmare
I have been fuming about this forever, but now its time for a rant!!
I have HATED the Microsoft Win 11 "Backup" NAG, it NEVER shuts up, even though I always tell it to go away.
I have a proper backup solution, so its extra annoying when I keep being nagged, for a pathetic attempt at backup (is it even a backup? or just a sync?)
Anyway - as I say, I always say NO..
however, I have in the past said "continue", just to see what it doing.. and made sure ALL options are unticked (another very annoying thing is when you open, irrespective of last time making sure everything unticked, next time you open, they all ticked again... GGGRRRRrrr )
Anyway - recently I noticed when I went into settings, it said "partially backed up".... I thought WTH!!! whats happened there?
So went to backup options and made sure all unticked... went into ondrive online to see if anything stored, didnt notice anything.. so was a mystery.
Next day, I noticed OneDrive was on when I booted my machine (its disabled to start, so that was unexpected). SO exited..
Next day it again on at boot, and showing errors... I went in and noticed in the "Sync and Backup" section in the "Manage backup" a couple of the items were selected on... so unselected them and when prompted said "keep on my PC only"
The errors (7) were all along the lines of you have items with same name already if you want keep them rename on PC and sysnc (I cant recall for sure... it poorly worded rubbish ). Having made selectins as detailed above.. I assumed I done.. I turned off OneDrive, disabled it from startup at boot again.. and thought I done.
Today I noticed items in my "Pictures" folder had gone... could not find them online in OneDrive.. they just gone.
I started up OneDrive, it still reported errors.. so went into OneDrive locally and it had 2 directories showing red x ... one of which was pictures/photos?
I just deleted the 2 directories with red X and all errors in OneDrive disappeared.. so I shut down OneDrive
Recovered the pictures from my REAL backup solution and came here to rant,.
What the Actual hell are MS doing? its being totally arrogant to do what it does, its not transparent on what its actually doing and gives totally inadequate controls to the user.
