Windows Update Fails Repeatedly With Error 0x80070005

On my Windows 10 PC where Windows Update repeatedly fails to install updates, consistently returning the error code 0x80070005. Despite trying multiple troubleshooting steps, including running the Windows Update troubleshooter, resetting Windows Update components, and ensuring I have administrator rights, the problem persists, preventing my system from receiving important security patches and feature updates. The error seems to occur regardless of the update I attempt to install, and my system remains stuck in an incomplete update state.

Error 0x80070005 is a frustrating "Access Denied" error that usually points to a permissions issue or interference from security software.

  • I recommend to perform clean boot and then remove third-party security software, if any.

  • Hi Lindanigro, 0x80070005 usually points to an access denied problem. Since you already reset update components, I’d next check third-party antivirus, permissions on C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and catroot2, and whether the Windows Update and BITS services can start cleanly. Running DISM and SFC is also worthwhile before trying an in-place repair upgrade.
