Windows 10 keeps forcing Edge even after I set Chrome as default
Every time Windows 10 does an update, it resets my default browser back to Edge. I've set Chrome as default more times than I can count, but the next patch comes through and it's back to Edge again. I even uninstalled Edge once, but Windows just put it back during the next update.
I've already gone through Settings and set Chrome as default for every file type I could find. Still happens. I'm not super comfortable messing with the registry unless I know what I'm doing.
Anyone else dealing with this on Windows 10? Found a way to make it stick for good?

Edge returning after an update is expected because it is a Windows component; that does not mean your defaults changed. In Windows 10, open Settings, Apps, Default apps and select Chrome under Web browser. Check defaults by protocol or file type and confirm HTTP, HTTPS, .htm, and .html point to Chrome. Restart Windows and test a link from a document or email. Some Windows features can still open Microsoft content in Edge, so use Default apps, not one system link, to determine whether associations reset. If they change again, check whether the PC is connected to a work or school account, because policy can enforce defaults. Also test a new profile and record which update precedes the change. Avoid registry scripts and Edge removal tools; they can damage servicing without controlling protected links. Standard Windows 10 support ended in October 2025, so confirm ESU coverage or plan a supported upgrade.
