The best free PDF splitter program to cut into separate files

What is the best free PDF splitter program to cut into separate files? That can allows me to cut a large PDF document into separate individual files, either by extracting specific pages or by splitting every page into its own file. The software must be truly free with no hidden costs, watermarks, page limits, or online upload requirements, and it should work offline on my local machine. I have tried a few online tools but they either impose file size restrictions or force me to pay after a certain number of uses.

Who can recommend a reliable Windows 10 or 11 desktop application that can quickly split large-sized PDF files while maintaining the original quality and format?

Thanks!

It is time talk about using the command line with q pdf as a PDF splitter on Windows 10. I know the command line sounds intimidating—like something out of a hacker movie—but I promise it's not as scary as it seems, and q pdf might just be the best PDF splitter you've never heard of.

Think of q pdf as a quiet, powerful workhorse. It's a free, open-source command-line tool that can do all sorts of clever things to PDFs without messing up the content . It doesn't have a fancy window with buttons, but that's its superpower. It's light, fast, and you can tell it exactly what to do by typing a simple sentence and hitting Enter.

Once you've got it installed, using q pdf as your PDF splitter is surprisingly straightforward. Here are the most useful ways to use the best PDF splitter:

To split every single page into its own file, this command is your go-to :

    bash

q pdf -- split- pages input. pdf output_ % d. pdf

Just replace input. pdf with your file's name. This command will create output_1. pdf, output_2. pdf, and so on. It's amazingly fast.

What if you only want a specific section, like pages 15 to 30? q pdf can do that in one line, making it a super precise PDF splitter:

    bash

q pdf input. pdf --pages . 15-30 -- output. pdf

This command grabs only the pages you want and saves them as a brand new PDF file.

As the PDF splitter for Windows 10/11, this tool is famously tiny. We're talking about a file size of around 200-365KB . To put that in perspective, that's smaller than a single high-resolution photo. You just download the ZIP file, extract it to any folder, and double-click SepPDF .exe . That's it. No installation wizard, no registry changes, no leftover files on your computer. It even runs in "stealth" mode, meaning it doesn't write any settings to your Windows registry.

SepPDF does one thing and does it well: it takes your PDF and creates separate files for each page . The interface is just a tiny dialog box—nothing fancy, but everything you need is right there.

You have two main options when using this PDF splitter:

    1. Split (All): This is the lazy-but-effective method. Just drag and drop your PDF onto the window, click this button, and SepPDF automatically creates one PDF per page. It saves them in the same folder as your original file, using the original name plus a page number (like document- 1 .pdf, document- 2 .pdf) . It's incredibly fast and error-free.

    2. Split (Page etc Input): This gives you a bit more control. You can specify a custom page range, like pages 5 through 10, to extract only those pages . You can also choose a different output folder and even match the timestamps to the original file . There's even a neat trick: if you drag a password-protected PDF onto SepPDF, it'll politely ask you for the password, then split it just fine.

SepPDF is built for simplicity, not for power users. If you need to extract complex page ranges (like pages 1-3, 5, and 8-10), this tool can't do that—it only handles a single continuous range like "1-10" . It also doesn't have a preview window, so you can't peek at the pages before you split them . And if your PDF uses complex Unicode characters (like Japanese or Arabic), SepPDF might not handle them perfectly .

You can use Microsoft Print to PDF as a PDF splitter on Windows 10. It’s built right into Windows, so you don’t need to install anything. Basically, you "print" only the pages you want to save, and instead of paper, you get a brand new PDF file with just those pages.

    Here are the simple steps:

    1. Open your large PDF file in any program that can read it. For example, Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or Adobe Reader.

    2. Press Ctrl + P to open the Print dialog. You can also go to File > Print.

    3. Under "Printer," select Microsoft Print to PDF from the list.

    4. In the "Pages" section, type the range you want to split out.

    5. Click the Print button. It won't actually print anything.

    6. A "Save Print Out put As" window will pop up. Choose where you want to save the new file, give it a name, and click Save.

That's it. You've just used this hidden PDF splitter to pull specific pages into their own file. Repeat the steps if you need to split out other page ranges from the original PDF. It's not fast for splitting hundreds of pages, but for a quick one-off job, it's totally painless.

PDF Arranger is an open-source desktop application and the most intuitive best pdf splitter available. Unlike PDF splitting tools that only support text-based operations, it generates page thumbnails for a visual preview, allowing you to view the content before splitting the pages.

Step 5: Right-click the selected thumbnails, choose “Export Selected Content,” and save them as new standalone PDF files.

Mutool is an open-source command-line tool and a minimalist pdf splitter program. All PDF splitting functions are performed exclusively via terminal commands; it does not provide a graphical interface and uses very little disk space and memory.

How to Use PDF splitter program

    1. Download the program from the official website.

    2. Open the Windows Command Prompt and use the `cd` command to navigate to the folder containing the software and the target PDF file.

    3. To split each page into a separate PDF file, run:

    `mutool poster -x 1 input.pdf output.pdf`

    4. To extract a specified page range, run:

    mutool extract input.pdf 1-10

    5. Wait for the command to complete; the split files will be saved in the current folder.

This command-line offline tool is a low-resource PDF splitter. It requires no additional graphical interface overhead when performing PDF splitting tasks, making it ideal for users comfortable with terminal commands.

    Disadvantages

    • Supports only command-line operations; there is no visual page preview panel.
    • Users must memorize specific command syntax when performing operations.
    • Apart from splitting, there are no other PDF editing features.
    • Page selection supports only numerical ranges.

LocalPDF Studio is an open-source PDF program and a reliable, high-quality best pdf splitter; however, it does not support splitting PDFs via online upload because all processing operations run locally in your computer’s memory without requiring an internet connection.

It allows you to split large PDF files in one go using two different modes, but its splitting functionality relies entirely on offline operations to protect document privacy.

First, launch the software and locate the dedicated “Split PDF” module on the main page.

Import the large source PDF file into the workspace, then select a splitting mode:

You can automatically split the entire document into single-page files, or enter a custom page range to extract only the desired content. Select an output folder and start the offline splitting task, then wait for all split files to be fully generated.

Once splitting is complete, you can open the output folder to view all the best pdf splitter.

As a secure, top-tier PDF splitter, this software cannot split files while uploading them to cloud servers, making it ideal for users who need to process confidential and private documents.

If you prefer to avoid risky web-based PDF splitting tools, give this program a try. It strictly keeps all data stored locally to prevent information leaks, so it should be your first choice when handling sensitive files.
