Sudden Security Warnings when starting an exe-File
Hello,
this is very strange: We have a network share mapped as drive "U" by login script on all our Windows 10 clients. From there, applications ("exe-files") are started. Suddenly, starting last Saturday, users get security warnings when starting these applications. The warnings are 'We can't verify who created this file.' Other users get different warnings, sometimes stating that the files ist started from an external network drive. When I map the same share to a different driveletter, I don't get the warnings. When I attach a local disk with drive "U" and I copy the content over, I get the same errors. When I assign a different driveletter to this local drive, I get no warnings. We can't find anything in GPOs, settings etc. It also seemes the the error somehow "spreads" across the clients. We have some "identical" clients with different behaviour. Some clients worked yesterday that showed the error today. We suspect something with the August patches which where rolled out the recent days, but we can not pin it to machines with August patches.
Anyone any idea?
Cheers
__Leo

Check specific warnings in Windows Security > Virus threat protection > Protection history. If it's a virus, you can unblock it by allowing the threat or adding an exclusion.

Thx for your answer. the problem ist not realted to specific executables. If you copy an exe file which starts w/o problems from another location to the "U" drive, you get the security warning. BTW, we are not using Defender anyway. When you allow the execution of files w/o question in the "Internet" zone in the IE security settings, the file starts al right w/o any qestion or problems. Somehow windows thinks dirve "U" belongs to the Internet Zone, no matter if it is a local drive or mapped network share
