Repeated failure of all Windows 10 version 22H2 cumulative updates (x64) since April\May 2024
Hi, I have a Windows 10 machine working normally apart from one exception. All cumulative Windows updates for version 22H2 all fail with code 0x800f0922 since 4-5/2024.
Every month each update of that type gets to 97% in the install process and rolls back - there is no detail of why the update has failed. All that happens after is the update is downloaded again, and the process is repeated later that day\the next day.
This has happened with every update since April 2024\May 2024. The only thing i can do is hide the 2H22 Windows 10 cumulative update when it comes out each month to stop the constant rebooting.
I have (without success):
- reset the software distribution folder \ catroot
- reset $WinRE agent folder
- increase the recovery partition to 500 mb of free space.
- sfc /scannow
- D-ISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
All other updates work fine. so it doesn't look like anything wrong with WA anyway. Just something in the cumulative updates the machine doesn't like - but I do not know what.
Does anyone have any ideas what this could be, its driving me crazy!

This error (0x800f0922) usually means Windows can’t access update files or your recovery partition is too small/corrupted; since you’ve tried the usual fixes, try temporarily disabling third-party security software, ensure .NET is enabled, and as a last resort, do an in-place upgrade/repair install using the latest Windows 10 ISO.

I am having the same problem. I know I have enough disk space C Drive is 1T. It starts to install and restarts. Then continues its update up to 92%. Then starts to undo the changes and restarts. It keeps wanting me to perform the update and keeps failing. So far the Microsoft suggestions have no help.

Make sure you have enough disk space on your system drive (usually C:). Windows Update can fail if there isn’t enough space for the update process.
Open File Explorer and check the available space on your C: drive.
If space is low, consider cleaning up unnecessary files using Disk Cleanup.
