No Audio output device is installed
Recently, I tried to update my windows (version 20H2) which was unsuccessful and I had this "No Audio output device is installed" with no sound on my laptop. I tried to update the windows again and it worked out fine.
Still, I have the same issue with my sound and running troubleshoot sound problems or reinstalling the audio driver doesn't work at all.
I have no hardware issue because I have no problem with ubuntu on the same system.
I searched a lot and all of them suggested uninstalling, reinstalling the audio driver which doesn't work.
Any suggestion is much appreciated.
Kind regards,
Ehsan

Your situation sounds frustrating, but it's good to know the hardware itself is functioning since Ubuntu runs fine. The "No Audio output device is installed" issue after Windows updates is a common problem and can stem from driver or system configuration issues.

Since Ubuntu works fine, hardware is likely intact. The issue is with Windows configuration or driver corruption. If none of these steps work, consider performing a repair install of Windows 10 as a last resort.

🔧 Step 1 — Restart into BIOS
You don’t need to change anything dangerous. We’re only looking for one setting.
- Restart your computer
- As soon as it begins booting, repeatedly tap the key that opens BIOS on your system:
- F2 or DEL are the most common
- Sometimes F10, F12, or ESC
If you’re unsure, try DEL first — it works on most desktops.
You’ll know you’re in BIOS when you see a blue or black settings screen.
🔍 Step 2 — Find the onboard audio setting
Every BIOS labels it slightly differently. Look for:
- Onboard Audio
- HD Audio
- Azalia Audio
- Realtek Audio
- Integrated Audio
- Audio Controller
It will be under one of these menus:
- Advanced
- Advanced → Onboard Devices
- Integrated Peripherals
- Chipset
What you’re looking for:
Make sure it is set to ENABLED.
If it’s disabled, that’s the entire reason Windows can’t see your audio hardware.
🔄 Step 3 — Save and restart
Once you confirm it’s enabled:
- Press F10 to save and exit
- Let Windows boot normally
- Check Device Manager again
If the audio controller reappears, everything else will fall into place automatically.
