How to make my computer run like new on Windows 10
Hello all,
My Windows PC used to run great, but lately it feels much slower than it did when it was new. Boot time is longer, programs take more time to load, and the whole system just feels less responsive.
Looking for advice on how to make a computer run like new again on Windows 10. Open to cleanup tips, maintenance steps, software tools, or hardware upgrades if they would help. Prefer solutions that are safe and not overly complicated.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

To make my computer run like new. Deleting from here can break your ability to uninstall updates, install new features, or even boot your PC. If you need to clean this folder, use the built-in DISM /StartComponentCleanup command in an Administrator Command Prompt or the Disk Cleanup tool with the "Clean up system files" option.

It is believed that as long as the hardware performance is powerful enough, any software can restore a Windows 10 computer to its original state. If your system is equipped with 4GB of memory and a 2015 mechanical hard drive, then no software optimization tool can make Windows 10 computer run like new. The operation methods of modern Windows systems, browser tabs, and background tasks do indeed require more resource support.
Utilize the built-in performance monitor to identify the actual bottlenecks. If the report indicates that your disk response time averages over 20 - 25 milliseconds, or that the memory usage remains consistently at 95 - 100% high, then the only solution is to upgrade the hardware. No matter how you make software adjustments, this problem cannot be overcome.
On modern personal computers, many visual effects are handled by the graphics processing unit (GPU), and this does not cause any performance loss. Turning off all these effects will make Windows 10 computer run like new, which will reduce usability without bringing any significant speed improvement. If you are determined to restore the original running state of your Windows 10 computer, avoiding common optimization errors is just as important as applying the correct repair methods.

Given that your PC "used to run great" but has degraded over months, the problem is almost certainly accumulated junk files and background services.
Performance Monitor (perfmon) analyzes your entire system over a 60-second period and highlights exactly what's dragging down performance. Using Performance Monitor is one of the smartest ways to make my computer run like new without installing any third-party software, as it helps you identify exactly what's slowing your system down so you can fix the root cause rather than just treating the symptoms.
How to run it:
1. Press Windows + R on your keyboard
2. Type perfmon /report and press Enter
3. Wait 60 seconds while Windows collects data
4. Review the color-coded report (green = good, yellow = warning, red = critical)
Think of it as your computer's "doctor." When you want to make my computer run like new, because Performance Monitor is a powerful built-in Windows diagnostic tool that has been part of the operating system since 1993. Unlike Task Manager which gives you a quick snapshot, Performance Monitor provides detailed, real-time data about how your system resources—CPU, memory, disk, and network—are being used.

Disable unnecessary startup programs in order to make computer run like new.
Many applications configure themselves to launch automatically when Windows starts, running silently in the background and consuming memory and CPU cycles before you've even opened a single file. This is one of the most common culprits behind slow boot times and sluggish overall performance .
How to do it:
Step 1: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
Step 2: Click the Startup tab (or "Startup Apps" in Windows 11)
Step 3: Review the list—pay attention to the "Startup impact" column
Step 4: Right-click any non-essential programs and select Disable
What you can safely disable: Most third-party software like music players, updaters for rarely-used apps, messaging clients, and utility tools. Keep your antivirus software enabled .
The effect is immediate—next time you restart, you'll notice faster boot times and less background activity.

When your storage drive becomes nearly full, Windows has less room to manage temporary files, run virtual memory, and perform essential background operations. Digital clutter accumulates from downloaded installers, temporary internet files, old Windows updates, and Recycle Bin contents, all of which contribute to slower performance.
Here are simple ways to let you make Windows 10 computer run like new.
Option A: Disk Cleanup (thorough, one-time)
1. Type "Disk Cleanup" in the Start menu and run the tool.
2. Select your Windows drive (usually C:).
3. Click Clean up system files (this may take a moment).
4. Check all boxes that appear and click OK > Delete Files.
Option B: Storage Sense (automated, ongoing)
1. Go to Settings > System > Storage
2. Turn on Storage Sense
3. Click "Configure Storage Sense or run it now" to set a schedule (daily, weekly, or monthly.)
4. Storage Sense will automatically delete temporary files and manage Recycle Bin cleanup.
Additional step: Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features and uninstall programs you no longer use or need. Once it is done, the Windows 10 computer will run like new!

Over time, every Windows 10 PC accumulates digital clutter, unnecessary background processes, and system overhead that can make it feel sluggish. The good news is that you don't need to buy new hardware to restore that fresh, snappy performance. Based on expert recommendations, performing a clean reinstall is the most effective way to make your computer run like new again.
Why it's the most effective method: A reset removes the layers of accumulated software conflicts, registry errors, bloatware, and system corruption that gradual slowdowns are built upon. It's the closest you can get to "like new" without actually buying a new computer .
Windows 10 includes built-in reset functionality that reinstalls the operating system while giving you options about your personal files. This is far more thorough than any cleanup utility because it addresses root-level system issues rather than surface-level symptoms.
How to make a computer run like new for Windows 10:
- Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery
- Under "Reset this PC," click Get Started
- Choose between:
- Keep my files - Removes apps and settings but preserves personal files
- Remove everything - Full reset to factory conditions (best for maximum performance)
- Follow the on-screen instructions
For an even cleaner result, you can use the Fresh Start feature (now called "Reinstall" in Windows Security), which downloads a clean Windows image from Microsoft and removes manufacturer-installed bloatware entirely
