How to convert pdf to word with formatting retained as the same?
Hi everyone,
Got several PDF files from work that need to be edited in Microsoft Word. Most of them are around 20–50 pages long and contain a mix of text, tables, images, headers, footers, and page numbers. A few also have complicated layouts with multiple columns and charts.
Tried opening the PDFs directly in Word, but the results weren't great. Some tables got broken, images moved to different positions, and the spacing between paragraphs was completely off. Even the page breaks didn't match the original documents.
Has anyone found a reliable way to convert PDF to Word with formatting retained as exactly as the same? Free or paid PDF to word converter tools are both fine, as long as they actually work.

FreeP2W may be an option to explore if you want to convert PDF to Word with formatting on a PC, but its conversion capabilities and formatting accuracy need to be verified before relying on it. In particular, check whether it preserves fonts, tables, images, columns, and page breaks rather than simply extracting text.
It uses document-layout detection and mathematical formula recognition to improve the conversion of text, tables, images, and equations into editable DOCX files.
To convert PDF to Word with formatting on Windows, install Python 3.8 or later and run:
pip install freep2w
freep2w input.pdf -o output.docxFreeP2W is worth trying for complex documents, particularly those containing equations and images. However, exact formatting is not guaranteed, and scanned PDFs may need OCR beforehand. Review the resulting Word file for layout changes.

If you prefer command-line tools, Pan doc is free. However, one important limitation is that Pan doc cannot directly convert PDF files into Word documents. It works best with supported document formats such as Markdown, HTML, and DOCX.
How to Convert PDF to Word with same Format:
Step 1. Extract the PDF content. Use a PDF text-extraction tool to extract text from your PDF. For scanned documents, run OCR first.
Step 2. Convert the extracted content. Save the text in a supported format, such as Markdown, then use Pan doc to create a Word document:
pan doc input.md -o output.docx
Step 3. Check the formatting. Open the resulting DOCX file in Word and adjust headings, tables, images, and spacing as needed.
Pan doc is a good free option for command-line document conversion, but it is not a direct solution to convert PDF to Word with same format. PDF extraction and OCR may lose layout details, so you should expect some manual adjustments. If preserving the original formatting is essential, test the workflow on a sample PDF first.

When I need to turn or convert pdf to word with same format without paying for a premium converter, Stirling-PDF is a useful option to explore. It's a free, open-source PDF tool that can run locally on your PC.
From PDF to DOCX in Three Steps:
01 — Open your PDF tool
Launch Stirling-PDF on your PC, open the conversion feature, and upload your PDF document.
02 — Convert the file
Select DOCX as the output format and start the conversion. Once processing finishes, save the resulting Word document to your computer.
03 — Check the result
Open the DOCX file in Word and review the fonts, tables, images, and page spacing. Scanned PDFs may require OCR before their text can be edited properly.
Will the Original Formatting Stay Intact?
If your goal is to convert pdf to word with same format, keep in mind that no conversion method guarantees a perfect match for every document. Simple, text-based PDFs usually offer a better starting point than scanned pages or complex layouts.

Filee may offer a convenient way to convert PDF files into editable Word documents on your PC, helping you reuse existing text and layout.
What About Formatting?
When you convert PDF to Word with formatting, elements such as headings, paragraphs, tables, and images may retain their original arrangement. However, results depend on the PDF structure. Scanned documents may require OCR, and complex layouts can shift during conversion.
How to Get Started?
1. Open Filee on your PC and locate its PDF-to-Word conversion feature.
2. Import your PDF and select Word as the output format, if supported.
3. Convert the file, open it in Microsoft Word or a compatible editor, and check the layout before making changes.

Complex PDFs with tables, images, and multi-column layouts often fall apart when opened directly in Word. Vellum is specifically designed to rebuild text, tables, and document structure into an editable DOCX. To convert pdf to word without losing formatting significantly, it is much more reliable than Word's basic import, provided the source PDF is reasonably structured. It handles both standard text PDFs (via pdf2docx) and scanned documents using a Tesseract-based OCR pipeline—a crucial distinction, as work documents often mix real text with scanned pages.
Convert PDF to Word Without Losing Formatting:
- Launch the desktop app and select your PDF.
- For normal text PDFs, use standard conversion. For scanned files, enable OCR (requires Tesseract on your system).
- Start the conversion. The app runs in the background, so you can check the log panel for progress.
- Open the generated DOCX and compare tables, images, headers, and spacing with the original PDF.
While Vellum offers a strong reconstruction, no converter can guarantee pixel-perfect results for every complex file. Borderless tables or floating charts may still require manual correction, so test a representative file before converting large batches.

Opening a complex PDF in Word often ruins the layout, with shifting tables and broken page breaks. DocShift offers a better way to convert pdf to word without changing format significantly. It turns your PDF into an editable DOCX while preserving the original text, tables, images, and layout.
Key Features:
• Converts PDFs to editable DOCX | • Preserves layout and images
• Local browser processing | • No sign-up or limits
How to convert pdf to word without changing format:
Step 1: Add the PDF ▼
Open DocShift and drop your PDF onto the page, or select it from your PC.
Step 2: Start the conversion ▼
Click Convert. On your first run, the browser will quickly download the required components.
Step 3: Save the Word file ▼
Once finished, click Download to save the resulting DOCX file.
Step 4: Check complex pages ▼
Open the DOCX in Word and review tables, images, and page breaks, especially in heavily formatted sections.
This is a highly useful fallback when Word's built-in importer fails. While no tool can guarantee a pixel-perfect result for every complex PDF, keeping the conversion local and getting an editable DOCX makes it much easier to fix any sections that don't transfer cleanly.

You can try a tool called PDF → DOCX Converter (pdf2docx-gui). This is a desktop tool specifically designed for converting PDFs to DOCX files.
If your main goal is to convert pdf to word with formatting retained, this is a pretty good choice.
Supported features:
- Paragraphs and text
- Tables
- Images
- Original page layout
- Local PDF processing
It's very easy to use:
- Launch the graphical interface, select the PDF file, specify the save location for the DOCX file, and then start the conversion.
- Afterward, you can open the generated document in Word and make any necessary adjustments.
I recommend checking complex tables, charts, and multi-column pages after conversion, as these elements are difficult for any conversion tool to reproduce perfectly. However, as a local tool, this is indeed a practical option worth trying if you need to convert pdf to word with formatting retained.
