How can I download music from iTunes to my computer?
Have a decent iTunes library built up over the years with a mix of purchased songs and albums, but recently realized that a lot of them aren't actually stored locally on the computer. They seem to exist only in the cloud and require an internet connection to play. Trying to get everything downloaded locally as actual files so they're accessible offline.
Looked around in the iTunes settings but the options aren't very intuitive and it's not clear which tracks are already downloaded versus which ones are still sitting in the cloud. There also seems to be a difference between iTunes Match and regular purchased content which is adding to the confusion.
Anyone familiar with how this works? Would love to understand the cleanest way for itunes music download as proper local MP3 files?

Use a dedicated iTunes music download software.

This method uses your computer's command line (Terminal on Mac or Command Prompt on Windows) to locate your downloaded files. While it does not perform the download itself, it solves the core problem preventing your iTunes music download to computer: identifying which files are missing.
Before you can download missing files, you must know exactly what is already on your computer. This method scans your hard drive to create a definitive list of your downloaded music.
On Mac (Using Terminal)
1. Open Terminal (found in /Applications /Utilities/).
2. Type or paste the following command:
bash
grep -rl [] ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Media/Music
3. Press Enter.
On Windows (Using Command Prompt)
1. Open Command Prompt (search for cmd in the Start Menu).
2. You will need to adjust the command for Windows. Try this:
cmd
findstr /s /m "[]" "C:\Users\YourUsername\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\* .m4a"
3. Press Enter.
These command-line methods are completely free and built into your operating system. They won't perform the download for you, but they will give you the exact information needed to complete your iTunes music download to computer without clicking the cloud button a thousand times.

It sounds like you want a true iTunes music download to computer. Screen recording software captures everything that appears on your display and everything that comes out of your speakers. If you were to play a song in iTunes while running a screen recorder, the software would create a video file showing the iTunes window moving while simultaneously recording the audio playing through your computer's sound system.
You would need to:
1. Set up your screen recording software
2. Play the entire song from start to finish while the recording runs
3. Stop the recording
4. Trim the silent parts from the beginning and end
5. Export the audio portion as a separate file
6. Manually add the song title, artist name, album art, and other metadata
Now multiply that by an entire library. If you have 500 songs, that is roughly 25 hours of continuous recording and editing—for inferior quality files. This is not a solution; it is a monumental waste of time.
But I need to be honest with you: screen recording is not a direct method for an iTunes music download to computer.

You can easily manage an iTunes music download to computer. This is the fastest way to download the entire contents of your library onto your computer.
How to do that:
1. Open iTunes on your computer.
2. In the menu bar at the top of the screen, click "Account".

iTunes and Apple Music primarily use the AAC format (.m4a) rather than MP3, but there are several ways to download iTunes music to MP3 format on your computer.
This is the best best way for converting a large batch of local music files.
Step 1: Download a free tool fre::ac
Step 2: Import your downloaded iTunes AAC files into the converter

The Smart Playlist method is the most effective free way to force an iTunes music download to computer for everything you own—without having to click on individual songs one by one. Think of it as creating a custom filter that automatically finds every single track in your library that exists only in the cloud and has no local file on your hard drive.
Now, if you want to see exactly what is missing before downloading, or if you only want to download specific songs or artists, use this method for iTunes music download.
1. Open iTunes and make sure you are signed in with your Apple ID.
2. Click Account in the menu bar, then select Purchased.
3. Click the Music tab at the top of the window that appears.
4. Click the button that says "Not in My Library" . This is the crucial step—it filters the view to show you only the songs that exist in the cloud and are currently missing from your computer.
5. From here, you have two options:
- Get specific items: Click the cloud download icon (☁︎↓) next to any song or album you want to save.
- Get everything missing: Click the Download All button, usually located in the lower-right corner of the window.

You can use iTunes Match for iTunes music download.
It is Apple's cloud-based music service designed for users who have built up a personal music library over the years whether through CD rips, MP3 downloads, or files from other sources and want to access that collection seamlessly across all their Apple devices.
How to download songs from iTunes to computer
Once subscribed, iTunes Match will automatically scan your entire local music library and compare it against Apple's catalog of over 100 million tracks. This process can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours depending on the size of your library, so it's best to leave your computer on and connected to the internet until it finishes.
Songs that couldn't be matched to Apple's catalog will be uploaded directly from your computer to iCloud. These are typically rare tracks, obscure recordings, or heavily edited files. A stable and reasonably fast internet connection is recommended here, as uploading a large number of files can be time-consuming on slower networks.
After that, you can download the songs from iCloud drive. You can repeat this on any Mac, iPhone, or iPad signed into the same Apple ID to access your full library anywhere.

Download purchased directly from the Music app.
This is the most straightforward and official way to download songs from iTunes you've already paid for from the iTunes Store. Whether you bought individual tracks or full albums years ago, Apple keeps a record of all your purchases linked to your Apple ID, meaning you can re-download them anytime, on any compatible device, without paying again. This method requires no subscription and delivers the full-quality, DRM-free file straight to your local library.
iTunes music download to computer
1. Open the Music app (macOS) or iTunes (Windows/older macOS)
2. Go to Account → Purchased → Music
3. Find the song and click the cloud/download icon next to it
4. Songs save locally to your iTunes/Music library
Pros
Free to use — no subscription or additional cost beyond the original purchase price
DRM-free files — downloaded songs are yours to keep and play on any device or media player
No expiry — files remain on your computer permanently, even if you cancel any Apple services
Original quality preserved — songs download at their purchased quality (typically 256kbps AAC) with no degradation
