Any recommendations for a DocuSign alternative?

I’m looking for a DocuSign alternative for occasional document signing. I’d like to sign PDFs received by email and send them back, as well as send documents to other people for their signatures.

A straightforward process for both the sender and the recipient would be important. When comparing services, I’d like to understand:

  • Whether recipients can review and sign without creating an account
  • What a free or low-cost plan includes, particularly the limits on signature requests
  • Whether I can track outstanding signatures and download the completed documents
  • Whether an audit trail is included or requires a paid plan

Could anyone recommend a service that handles these tasks reliably? I’d especially appreciate hearing about any plan limits or recipient-side difficulties that are easy to overlook when choosing an alternative.

For occasional document signing, the main differences between services are the monthly sending allowance, whether recipients need an account, and whether audit records are included. A free DocuSign alternative can cover light use, but tracking and audit features may require a paid plan.

Two options worth comparing are eSignGear for straightforward online signing and Adobe Acrobat Sign for more structured business workflows.

eSignGear — for occasional personal use and small-business paperwork

eSignGear is an online tool that lets you sign PDFs and request other people’s signatures directly in your browser. Recipients can review, sign, and download completed documents without creating an account or paying.

Its free plan includes two document sends per month with no signee limits, activity history, and basic document security. That makes it a practical DocuSign alternative for personal use when sending only a couple of documents each month.

Premium adds unlimited sends, real-time tracking and notifications, advanced security options, and detailed audit reports. The distinction is that free activity history is not the same as a detailed audit report.

Here’s how to eSign a document online with eSignGear:

    1. Upload your PDF.
    2. Select You to sign it yourself, or Add Signee and enter the email addresses of the people whose signatures you need.
    3. Place the signature and date fields.
    4. For self-signing, complete Finish and Sign, download the PDF, and attach it to your email reply.
    5. For signature requests, complete the sending flow. Recipients review and sign through their invitations; download the completed document after the required signatures are finished.

Adobe Acrobat Sign — for recurring agreements and structured business processes

Adobe Acrobat Sign is an established option for businesses that need reusable templates, signing order, or integrations with existing systems.

Standard email-based signing does not require recipients to create an Adobe account, although senders can configure additional authentication. Senders can track agreements and download completed documents and audit reports from Manage. Audit reports are included across service tiers; advanced report configuration depends on the tier.

The standalone Acrobat Sign Solutions offering has a trial and sales-based pricing. Sending allowances and subscription terms belong to the purchased package, rather than an ongoing free plan.

    To request signatures:

    1. Sign in, select Send, and upload the agreement.
    2. Add the recipients and set their signing order if required.
    3. Select Preview & add fields and assign each signature field to the correct recipient.
    4. Select Send.
    5. Use Manage to follow progress and download the completed agreement and audit report.

For individuals sending up to two documents a month, eSignGear’s free plan is a sensible starting point. For a DocuSign alternative for small business, eSignGear Premium suits routine requests that need unlimited sending, real-time updates, and detailed audit records. Adobe Acrobat Sign is more relevant when reusable templates, ordered signing, and business integrations drive the decision.

One detail matters when you sign a PDF received by email: an ordinary attachment can be signed and returned through your chosen tool, but an existing signing-service invitation should be completed through its original link to preserve the sender’s tracking and signing records.
