Universal Print for not Domain Joined Windows Computer

We are currently in the process of making Universal Print available at our University.
Administrative Staff and Faculty Members can already benefit from UP - especially sending print jobs while users are not connected to our core network is much appreciated. Computer for these users are managed by Intune and member of our domain. Roll-Out happened with Intune Device Configuration and is working mostly well.

Our Students come with their own personal/private computer (BYOD). These devices are NOT managed by Intune and are NOT member of our Windows Domain. When they come with an Apple macOS device, they can easily install "Universal Print" from Apple App Store and are ready to got - perfect.
BUT, when my students come with a Microsoft Windows computer, they cannot take advantage of UP, because UP would only work, if they login to Windows with their University M365 account.

It is ridiculous, that Microsoft punish users of their own operating system harder then Apple macOS users.

Have anyone found a solution for this type of scenario?

I already added a feature request: Universal Print App for not Domain Joined Windows Users

Best regards
Daniel

  • You're absolutely rightthis limitation feels counterintuitive. One workaround is setting up a Universal Print proxy connector with a shared print queue, allowing students to print without signing into Windows with a university M365 account. It's not perfect, but it can bridge the gap for BYOD Windows users.

  • Hey Daniel_Wedewardt thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, you're right: you need to sign in to Windows with your org's M365 account to install UP printers.

If students are printing from OneDrive/SharePoint, they can print files straight from the browser without joining their device.

We also offer a comprehensive suite of Microsoft Graph APIs, allowing customers to support virtually any custom workflow they require.

Hope these solutions are helpful! Thanks.

It seems like such a strange requirement -- is there a possibility for a Universal Print app on the Microsoft Store app, so that once downloaded, the app allows users on Windows Home or not connected to a work /school domain to sign into just the print app to be able to add printers from their org onto personal devices? It seems strange to make Windows users do more work when the MacOS solution is far more comfortable for end users in terms of signing into one app or letting an entire org profile into a private machine.
