Why does 'Upload' disappear from modern document library?

We've got 3 libraries in a SPO site. The standard 'Documents', and 2 others that have other fields added as metadata (just single text and choice fields) - otherwise they're just default document libraries.

I can drag a file from my desktop to the Document library, but not the other 2. Chrome/Edge/IE/whatever, nope.

Going to classic mode works.

Going through OneDrive shared libraries sort of works (no drag/drop, but at least upload allows multiple selections)

I can tell immediately when it will work.

Libraries that have New - Upload - Sync -... menu options work.

Libraries that have  New - Quick Edit.... menu options don't.

And you can see the correct menu for a couple of seconds, then it updates to the version that doesn't work.

My user swears last week this was how she was doing it - dragging from desktop into the library. Would the number of extra fields added have something to do with it? Or is it a specific type? I've removed any column formatting but that didn't fix things...

  • Hi guys

I had this exact same issue with some of my users yesterday.  They had some folder and file names beginning with #.  This causes all kinds of errors.  I went in and removed them from all the names, and the upload button appeared again!

Just as an additional heads up, I came across the # in a title issue a few weeks back.  The users were trying to open up a spreadsheet in Excel, and it would appear blank.  It had opened fine in the browser, and there was content in there.  Also, on some of their spreadsheets, they just got 'an error occurred' message and they could only open them in the browser.  I logged a call with Microsoft but they didn't give me the answer.  It was a colleague who had experienced this in a previous role!

    I hope this helps someone!

We are seeing this too this morning, no upload option.

Switching view or switching to classic seems to reload the script that displays the button.

Drag and Drop fails when the upload button is not displayed.

This should be fixed by now. Please test again.

  • Hi - our company appears to be having this issue too. Started with a few folks, and appears to be many more now. The likes of New, Upload and Sync fail to appear (....refer image for what we see, same as you Robin Nilsson? They may show up briefly... but then disappear. I have captured via Fiddler trace and recorded my screen and will raise to Microsoft now. Quite an annoying issue really!

Not sure what that Templates is? Wonder if that has something to do with it? 3rd party add in? That is indicative of a list view and not a documents library toolbar. Wondering if something is up with the framework with customization there causing it to not recongnize the list type propery. Curious if you have any custom buttons showing on your bar Robin?

ChrisWebbTech Good point, could be to do with that. It's Jungle docs btw, yes a 3rd party add-in hosted on Azure (https://www.enovapoint.com/sharepoint-document-automation/) and it's our Template Management system. Also... it appears to work fine on sites where the plug in isn't applied. It all worked fine until earlier today, so must be an MS change (I'm sure it's not the app, as this has happened before and appeared to be an MS change). Anyway, have raised with them, so will see what they say.

Nope. No checkout, no required fields in the additional fields added.

Interesting thing, if i add the problem library to a page as a webpart, it works fine!

about the only thing i can think of to do is create a new library, and add fields until it breaks...

another strange thing. This is a library I used as a site script base. I ran it on another site to create a duplicate library and that works fine as well. Maybe theres a document name thats breaking the view... but theres only 30 docx in it.

(edited post because everywhere I should have said library, I said list. Sorry for the confusion, old brain at work)

I was going to think the opposite was going on that they were using web parts instead of the list itself. Something doesn’t add up. You said create new list? These are libraries your created not lists right? You can’t drag etc. into list of that be the case as each row is an item and not a document, but you said it works in classic so and web part so Probabaly not that.
