How can I get quick navigation on the left side to show on a communication page?
I don't think you can - I've never run across any instructions for that. Nor any customizations. Guess that's one reason not to use communications - if you need a left nav, you need a team site.
I'd just put everything you'd usually have in the left nav in the top nav. Kind of like we did with the Oslo master pages in SP 2013. Then look at the mega menu when it's released.
