Why can documents be edited in the web application, but read only in the desktop app?

Has anyone figured this out? I am still experiencing the same thing 2.5 years later. Interesting that in one of our sharepoints this happens and the other it does not. To be clear: If I pause OneDrive synchronization, files open in Read-Only ("Viewing") mode, if I reactivate OneDrive files open in Editing mode.
