Visitors are displaying as visitors and members

We have a classic SharePoint site (not connected to a Group). I added a bunch of external users to the visitor group. When I review the site permissions from the home page the users are listed only in the visitor group with read access. They are not listed in the members group.

However, if I go to the document library, the ui changes to the modern ui. When I select the cogwheel> site permissions, all of my visitors are also listed as members with edit access. If I check permissions for any of those individuals it again tells me that they have read access.

Also, if I check permissions for the document library, I can confirm that the document library does not contain unique permissions from the site.

Is this just a fluke with the modern UI? Or do my visitors have edit access? Can someone tell me what other settings I should check?

This attachment is the only place where I see that these users have visitor and member access.

Note: this site is not inheriting permissions from the parent site.

I had a very similar issue and have found a solution. Hope it works for you!

We have a public sharepoint site that we would like owners to have full permissions, members have edit perms, visitors have read perms, and external users no access at all. We also have a document library within this site that we have titled Private Docs and would like to keep that library only visible to owners and members, but NOT visitors.

Unfortunately, Sharepoint seems to default to a setting that assumes everyone is a member except external users.

To fix this, I had to visit the advance permissions settings for "members" and remove the setting "Everyone except external users". In addition, to enable site visitors to have read access, I wen't into the "visitors" setting and added the correct setting by searching "everyone except external users" and adding it.

To keep the document library private, even from visitors, I went into "permissions for this document library", used unique permissions, then removed visitors.

  • Can you screenshot what you see. It's going to just be a rendering bug if anything, because I don't even show my visitor group on mine at all but it's there in advanced.

Oh i thought you meant he group was showing not individuals. Are those individuals in the members sharepoint group at all?
