Subsites per Site Collection in SharePoint Online
In the SharePoint Online software boundaries and limits it's written, that you can only create 2'000 subsites per Site Collection in SharePoint Online: Subsites: Recommended up to 2,000 subsites per...
Agree with Dean...indeed we could say that same software limits you can read for SharePoint 2013 / 2016 should be applicable to SPO...by the way do you think you need to create more than 2000 subsites under a site collection?
If Microsoft recommends a limit for SharePoint Online, then it's better to follow it. Otherwise you may have an unsupported situation. So an official statement would be very helpfull.
In my opinion, comparing several approches (like lots of Site Collections vs. lots of Sites) is an recurring task for a SharePoint Consultant :).
