Mar 20, 2017Sorting Global Search Information
Good afternoon all -
I am trying to find a way to sort the results of a global search in SharePoint Online to list results in created date or modified date order when a search is run.
I have not found much informaiton or settings in SharePoint Online to modify these settings. Was hoping someone might be able to provide some guidance.
thanks
Derek
- Just saw an advertisement for a Search Workshop: https://searchexplained.onfastspring.com/sharepoint-2016-and-office-365-search-in-practice-workshop-nyc?mc_cid=2fe538c173&mc_eid=4e316bfffd

I watched that workshop and it was very good. Matthew McDermott understands search very well and is an excellent teacher/presenter.
As Dean mentioned, a query rule will provide this functionality.
However, your users may still want the default behavior. I typically create a new page for customized displays. At a high level, perform the following steps:
- In search center, add a page
- Edit search results web part
- Change query
- Select Sorting tab, modify as appropriate
- Click OK on web part edit pane
- Save page
- Navigate to Site Settings
- Under Search, click Search Settings
- Configure Search navigation - add the new page
The new navigation item displays below the search box on the results pages, alongside People, Conversations, etc.
- Dean_GrossSilver ContributorYou can do this with a Query Rule, see https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Manage-query-rules-53556bb4-3625-490b-aa89-1223e3d4ce3f
