The closest thing you can do is use the Frequent sites from SharePoint Home, they are also releasing a webpart so you can add this to your Intranet homepages, along with files etc. Detailed here: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Microsoft-SharePoint-Blog/SharePoint-web-part-updates-Yammer-Conversations-My-Documents/ba-p/303719
It would be a good suggestion IMO to have an option to configure it to show followed sites, but right now there isn't anything out of the box that allows this. So your back to having to create your own SPFX assuming graph has the follow information available.
