Site collection size limit

UPDATE: site collection limit has since been increased to 25TB.

My company's structure consists of divisions, departments and teams. We had hoped to use site collections, sites and subsites to reflect this. But with site collections limited to just 1TB in size, it isn't going to work.

Why is there  a 1TB limit? Is it an arbritary number? A SharePoint limitation? Something else?

  • If you use the Site Collection as the "unit" for your company structure, this 1 TB limit should not be a problem...Just create a site collection per each division, department, etc

  • It's mostly about latency and throughput. Mostly for backups but also for data retrieval. SharePoint backups begin to fail and time out if the database is too large. This can be allowed if the DB backbone is uber fast (see https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262787(v=office.16).aspx#ContentDB). The page I linked is for SP2016, but the DB rules still apply. My guess is this is the current top limit of the data centers hosting SPO. What kind of space are you looking for and why can't it be split between multiple sites collections? You can link the data together via search.
