SharePoint Webpart page functionality limitations?

SPO modern pages and web parts don't work anything like the old SP 2013 did. It's unfortunate but, in my view, basically you need to re-think the whole structure of your site and re-build it. It's a big upgrade and a lot of work!

Do you have any suggestions on the direction I should be looking / thinking of for these problems? There is a lot to figure out and any suggestions would greatly appreciated.
