SharePoint Version column in Documents

Hello,

what is the best way for SharePoint Online to get the generated Version Number inside a Word Document.

I just know the solution with Labels (Information Management Policy Settings) but from reading on the internet this is deprecated and also not enabled by default. 

Their must be another solution as this is fairly standard in a document management system.
