SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure

I have a modern communication site that has some customizations on it as well as the publishing feature enabled. We need to install a 3rd party application that requires publishing to be deactivated for the installation process. My question is if we deactivate this feature(which I am sure will break some things on our site) can we activate publishing again and bring back all the features exactly as they were before or will it be permanently broken? I do not want to break something that will not go back.
