SharePoint Search not finding results - Inconistent Experience with and without *

Question

Searching a SharePoint Online Calendar, for a job number I can find some items without * and some items only with *.&nbsp; This is perplexing as the job number is part of a text field in all records.&nbsp; E.g. I searched for 42367 and found the record but 41722 it wouldn't find the record until I searched for 41722*.&nbsp; Both job numbers are part of a very similar string where the only difference is the number.
Any suggestions as to what might be causing this?

That is strange indeed in these numbers are in the same library? and Same Column?

Same list, same column and do not appear in any other column.

That is really strange indeed as i could think a column has text or number and the difference in that would explain the issue.

As far as I can tell it’s completely random. Not one user’s entry, list not at limit. However it seems to always work if we search for string* even though the string isn’t first thing in the field so really should be *string*. The field I am searching always has structure [?] ????? NameAs we now have a way that always works it’s no longer an issue for my client, but i’ll be looking for it elsewhere too, see if I can spot a pattern.
