sharepoint online folder inheritance

Hi all,

This may be an ignorant question but, I'm new to Sharepoint Online. I wanted to know in simple terms, if there is a way to stop the  inheritance of metadata from the parent folder to the sub folder?

We have a folder for each student. The parent folder has there contact metadata but the files that need to be in there sub folder contain report cards, misc. docs. It would be nice to be able to identify those docs in the metadata without changing the metadata on the parent folder.
