Did this situation ever resolve for you because the same thing happened to me today while I was working in SharePoint Online. It worked 1 minute and it was gone the next right in the middle of the day.
intersign I'm having this same issue -- I can "open" a text file in the online text editor, it starts in a new browser tab, but the ribbon has NO commands present to save my changes.
