SharePoint list - can't create more than 12 columns (Type: Person/Group)

How come I can't create more than 12 columns of the type Person or Group?

When I create column no 13 the list crashes. It just says 'Something went wrong' and 'try again later'.

I googled it, and you're supposed to be able to create 96 columns of the type Person or Group.

  • Hi Deleted,

You are hitting the lookup column limit for a single view. You can have no more than 12 complex columns (lookup, person/group, managed metadata) in a single view. So you can add more than 12 to your lists/libraries, but you will have to hide a couple in the view. All columns will appear in the list forms, though.

This limit is described in this SharePoint Online Limits support article:

This link: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/sharepoint-online-limits-8f34ff47-b749-408b-abc0-b605e1f6d498 you provided does not state anything about the maximum number of managed metadata/lookup columns you can display in a view.  Is there other Sharepoint documentation that does?

      Thanks.

Is there any plans from MS to allow for more complex columns per view? It complicates things a bit for me and my end users that we can only have 12 columns per view.

Not to my knowledge. You could submit it on SharePoint UserVoice as an idea. https://sharepoint.uservoice.com/forums/329214-sites-and-collaboration
