Sharepoint Image Dimensions Processing

Hi,
I'm trying to find out how the image dimension property get assigned to Images uploaded to SharePoint?
It seems when I upload the image, the dimensions do not initially appear, over the course of a random timeframe, normally hours, the dimensions suddenly appear. Is this done in the back-end via a batch job or something? Is there any way to speed the process up?
