SharePoint 2013 version history credentials prompt

When users click on the most up to date version of a word document, opens MS word, no prompting for login. When clicking on a previous version of same file, MS word opens but prompts for a login.  This is causing annoyance for our users.  Is this a known issue?  Is there a way to stop this version history credentials prompt?
