I can't seem to get this working in a template. is there a trick to it ?
I set the values up and saved as a template, but my new documents don't have it set

I used a .docx file as the template and added it through Add Template in document Library because it allows new documents to inherit all the template properties (Always Open Read‑Only). A .dotx file doesn’t support inheriting those properties in SharePoint.
- .docx templates: Inherit all custom properties and metadata when used in SharePoint
- .dotx templates: Do NOT inherit custom properties when used in SharePoint
- Uploading a .docx via Add Template is the correct method when you need metadata inheritance.

I'll give that a go ... the challenge will be documents created outside of sharePoint. but if it works that's a good start
