"Shared" indicator or column for files or folders in SharePoint library

When a folder is shared from OneDrive, there is a visual indicator on the folder icon and also a separate "Sharing" column that shows it's status as Private or Shared. We have a request from a few department to mirror that functionality in their SharePoint sites. There's one UserVoice post on this (https://sharepoint.uservoice.com/forums/329214-sites-and-collaboration/suggestions/32276125-visual-indicator-on-shared-items) with a paltry 8 votes, so I'm not expecting that to get anyone's attention. 

I'm wondering if there might be a way to achieve this with List View Formatting. I understand the basics of that, but what I'm struggling with is how to identify if an item has been shared/has one or more sharing links associated with it. Anyone have any ideas?
