Sequential reference number in list with required data

I've created a contract register in Sharepoint lists and I'm looking to do automatic numbering for my contract reference numbers. There was already existing data that I have populated but going forward there are columns that I have formatted so that the column requires information (Title, route FY to name a few). How would I be able to generate ref numbers while not having to fill that information in advance?
