Redirecting the SharePoint home button (not the browser home button)
I am trying to have the home button that normally takes you to the SharePoint Start Page redirect to a specific SharePoint page.
I have done the following:
- Created a communication site
- Created a news link pointing to the target SharePoint site
- Given visitor access to everyone except external users
- Set the SharePoint Home site to the redirect site (more on this further down)
This did not get me what I was looking for.
Then I tried the following from the redirect site:
- Enabled Global Navigation and disabled all of the links with the exception of Home
- This is not perfect as it requires two clicks, but it's better than having users directed to the SharePoint Start Page
- Enabled Global Navigation and disabled all of the links with the exception of Home
I then thought "Well... good enough I guess. I know I'm trying to do something that wasn't expressly intended so this will have to do."
I delete the redirect site to start over (there were a lot of things I tried and I wanted a fresh site without all of the funky things I did while testing).
Once I had the ACTUAL site that I was going to use as the redirect site with all of the permissions and the news link created. You know... the thing that worked literally 15 minutes ago. I go to set Global Navigation and the stupid setting is... just... gone. I then go to SharePoint admin center and low and behold when I try to set the Home site it says "Home site set up has moved to Viva Connections in the Microsoft 365 admin center". This is ABSOLUTLY NOT what I am looking for.
Basically, my questions are:
What changed in that 15 minutes?
How do I get the Global Navigation setting back?
Is there some other way to change the behavior of the home button in the SharePoint site (not the browser home button) so that it takes the user to a specific SharePoint site and not the SharePoint Start Page?
