Powerapps - the worst thing to happen to SharePoint this decade

Lets pretend I own a construction management company, or some entity that deals with a lot of one-time contractors submitting bids, etc. A friend suggests I use SharePoint to organize my business information and documentation, as they have robust features and exciting new features. Needless to say this person will not be my friend in the near future. I set up an enterprise grade SharePoint plan and start making lists and libraries in a modern site. I set up my core team and start inviting external users (bidders) as guests.

In the beginning my lists work great. I set them so control numbers are unique, duplicates not allowed. If the user attempts to enter a duplicate the system will kindly inform them. After a while I need to customize my list form for whatever reason. Since javascript and edit form are gone in modern sites, I can use a Powerapps form. Exciting!

So I make my little custom form. Hmmm, I no longer receive errors when the user tries to enter duplicates. Oh well, I'm sure they'll figure it out eventually, am i right? Whatever.

Then Joe the plumber phones me up. As a site guest he can't log his bid anymore. Hmm, looks ok to me, whats the problem? Oh look, he needs some kind of license to use this custom Powerapps form I made for my list. Awesome!

So, long story short, modern sites provide a crippled experience, please give them money. I thought Steve Ballmer retired...

Also, if you make the mistake of embedding Powerapps forms in your site pages to display information, similar things will happen for visitors. As if it were bad enough they were slow loading and annoying with their splash screens. Just don't use Powerapps, period.

  • Hey Chad, thanks for the feedback. We hear you (and many others) on guest / external access, and it's something we're working on but not quite ready to share a delivery date yet. We're also working on the perf side of things for embedded forms and making progress, you'll see that continue over the next few months.
