Opening SharePoint List Attachments in Browser

On modern SharePoint list view, is it expected when attachments within an item is clicked to not render in the browser?  For example, if a Word document is attached, should it be expected that it opens in the browser with Microsoft Word (online)?  We've had a few cases on a number of different computers and browsers where an attached Word document opens up in Microsoft Word (online) but in other cases, it downloads and opens the document on the client.  if the SharePoint list experience is switched to a classic SharePoint, documents will then open in the browser.

I've tried researching to find information concerning this behavior but found nothing.  The only thing I found was the "Opening Documents in the Browser" settings for a documents library but it is not available for a SharePoint list.

Any assistance or guidance would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks,

  • I would expect attachments are opened in the browser so I think what you are seeing is just a problem (or even bug) of the modern experience in lists

Only thing I could maybe see being different is the files being doc va docx

This issue is seen on our test tenant as well.  As for the extension, we are using .docx.
