Opening .msg files from sharepoint natively in Outlook
bizarre omission is indeed the best description of this, we also are annoyed by this day-in-day-out. with all the CO pilot/knowledge graph developments something simple as this i would expect to be easy

Using Group Policy (see earlier reply) can close the functionality gap for Edge and Chrome on Windows clients. This capability is not available for other browsers such as Firefox or Safari.
There are alternatives for viewing emails and attachments (pdf, docx, zip, jpg, msg, ...) directly within the browser. For example:
