News WebPart - Filter

Is it possible to use a lookup column for filtering News posts in the WebPart? 

I'm using a Modern site and I have news posts that are relevant to multiple news channels and am trying to use the lookup feature as a tagging system and then using the filters on each channel to pull those tags. I could split out all of the tags into different columns, but I would really prefer to not do this. 

Has anyone had success with this?
